LCC Science Center partners with KLRN TV

Public television and environmental science will benefit from a new partnership launched by Laredo Community College and the PBS TV affiliate, KLRN Channel 9.

LCC has joined forces with KLRN and its MemberCard program, which offers special privileges and benefits to members in return for their support of public television.

KLRN MemberCard holders can now take advantage of a one-time, two-for-one admission discount to the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at the LCC downtown campus, located at the west end of Washington Street.

“Laredo Community College’s partnership with KLRN is a win-win situation.  MemberCard holders who take advantage of the discount offer will have an opportunity to discover the benefits of the Rio Grande ecosystem and support the advancement of public television,” said LBVESC Center Director Tom Miller.

The LBVESC admission fee is regularly $4 for adults and $2 for children or senior adults.  The Center is open to the public Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Located on the north side of the LCC campus, the LBVE Science Center offers opportunities for nature lovers to view American alligators and other live specimens, plus discover the contributions made by the life-giving Rio Grande river.  The Center features hands-on demonstrations, water areas for live specimens native to the Rio Grande, diorama displays, and the adjacent Paso del Indio nature trail which offers a scenic view of the river and serves as a haven for various types of birds.

Large pools with special viewing areas offer glimpses of the 10 pound Bass, the rare Rio Grande Cichlids, and more.  Outdoor green areas offer glimpses of several threatened species, including the Texas tortoise.  Indoors, the diamondback rattlesnake can be heard rattling for its dinner.

The Science Center was designed to serve as a living laboratory for college students.  Local school children also gain a hands-on learning experience with the plants and animals which make their home in the Rio Grande watershed through the Center’s K-12 eco-curriculum.
