LCC offers ways to learn English language

Opportunities to learn or improve English language skills are available this fall at Laredo Community College.  Registration for the Fall 2004 semester at LCC is from August 24 to 26 at the Maravillo Gymnasium.

English as a Second Language (ENSL) students follow a sequence of classes from Level 1 to Level 4.  The instruction offered by the LCC Foreign Languages Department consists of three classes.  One is a lecture/reading class.  The second class is a grammar course.          The third is a laboratory course where students listen, repeat and answer lessons from the two other classes.

“Our ENSL courses follow a detailed curriculum,” says Foreign Languages Department Chair Rosalinda Herrera.  “The instructors in the foreign languages department are aptly prepared and experienced to teach ENSL.”

Herrera added that classes are conducted totally in English to help the students listen, speak and hear the target language to its fullest.

To determine their English language skills, students may take an oral ENSL placement exam offered free of charge by the LCC Assessment Center.

LCC offers choices for students to enroll in morning or evening ENSL classes.

Students who attend morning classes study Monday through Friday for about two hours, said Herrera.  Evening classes are offered twice a week—either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday—from 6 to 9:50 p.m.

LCC also offers two conversational ENSL classes which a student take in conjunction with the fourth level of ENSL after they complete the fourth level.

Herrera noted that ENSL classes are available at the LCC main campus at West End Washington Street and the new LCC South campus at 5500 South Zapata Highway.  The classes are open to students who are 17 years or older.

In addition to the ENSL classes, the LCC Foreign Languages Department offers various levels of study on the languages of Spanish and French.

For more information, contact the LCC Foreign Languages Department by calling 721-5355.  LCC will offer limited service hours on August 23 due to Employee Convocation activities, but will resume normal office hours on August 24.

Regular (arena) registration will be conducted August 24 to 26 at the LCC main campus only in the Maravillo Gymnasium.  Registration on August 24 and 25 will be through alphabetical sequence according to the student’s last name.  Registration is open to all students on August 26 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
