Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club gift to benefit LCC adult students

Laredo Community College has received a $1,000 gift from Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club to promote literacy among the hundreds of students that benefit from the college’s Adult Education program.

Carmen Seibert-Martinez, Director of Adult Education at LCC, says that the college is pleased to have received the donation, which will help create a reading club for adult literacy.

“With this special gift from Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club, Laredo Community College will be able to promote literacy through a reading club where adult education students will be able to check out books, including fiction, nonfiction and timed readers for testing purposes,” said Seibert-Martinez.

“The Reading Club will even have children’s books so that our adult education students can take home to read to their children,” she added.

The goal of this project, says the LCC official, is to raise the reading levels of students and encourage them to go beyond the GED diploma and pursue a college education.

“The LCC Adult Education program is encouraging students to read inside and outside of the classroom,” noted Seibert-Martinez.

The $1,000 gift is part of a national effort of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club in celebration of last month’s National Literacy Day.  Nearly $6 million in grants were awarded to literacy organizations across the country.

For more information, contact Seibert-Martinez at the LCC Adult Education Department by calling 721-5436.
