LCC alum to preview Lorca March 3

Jose De Leon, professional actor and a Laredo Community College alumnus, will present a lecture and demonstration of his one-man show, Lorca, on Wednesday, March 3, on campus to students and the community.

The one-hour presentation will be March 3 at 2 p.m. in the Arena Theater of the LCC Adkins Building.  Admission is free of charge.

LCC Speech and Theatre Instructor Gilbert Martinez says De Leon offers the demonstration of his show for the benefit of LCC students enrolled in an Introduction to Theatre class. Community members are invited.

“It is a pleasure to welcome back Jose De Leon to Laredo Community College,” says Martinez.  “We appreciate the willingness of an LCC alum to share his talents as a professional actor with our students.”

The lecture and demonstration will include historical information about the author Gabriel Garcia Lorca and his work, photos from Lorca's Granada, dramatizations of scenes from the one-man performance, and a question and answer session.

“This demonstration covers major aspects of the life and the works of Spain’s best known poet and one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century,” notes Martinez.

De Leon says that the Spanish Civil War serves as a political background for Lorca, which introduces audiences to the author’s prose, poetry, theatre, and songs, as well as the people who played significant roles at different stages of his life.  The play, set on the day of the poet’s arrest, also explores the multifaceted personality of Lorca who was assassinated in 1936 by anti-Republican rebels, and whose books were destroyed and works banned for almost 20 years in Franco’s Spain.  De Leon will be performing his full one-man show this weekend at the Laredo Little Theatre.
