LPO opens 25th season at LCC Oct. 3

The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director Brendan Townsend, will open its Silver Anniversary season with a concert, entitled “Hi Ho Silver,” on Sunday, October 3, at 4 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center at Laredo Community College.  Season and individual concert tickets are now on sale at LCC, TAMIU and other sites across town.

This is a special year for the LPO, which last year began a successful collaboration with Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University. The 25th anniversary of the foundation of the orchestra in Laredo is being marked by the season’s theme “Silver Memories/Golden Dreams” as the LPO Board looks towards the next 25 years.

Opening with “Hi Ho Silver,” the music director has focused the program towards celebrating music in America. Included in the program are three dances from the popular “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland–one of which is better known currently as the “Beef” commercial–a set of Texas country fiddle tunes arranged by LPO Music Director/Conductor Brendan Townsend himself; “The Syncopated Clock” of Leroy Anderson–for years the principal arranger and composer for the Boston Pops Orchestra; and the “Stars & Strips Forever” of John Philip Sousa. The second half of the program is the 9th Symphony of Dvorak subtitled “From the New World” because it was inspired by the sounds of the Americas Dvorak experienced during his tenure at the helm of the National Conservatory of Music in the 1890’s.

Tickets for the season are $75 (seniors $45) and individual concert tickets are $20 ($12 seniors).  Admission is free with a student ID card. Tickets can be purchased at the business offices at both LCC and TAMIU, as well as Piccirillos, Elmo Lopez Music and Emperor Garden. For further information contact the LPO at 326-3039.
