Careers in business and transportation will benefit from two new certificate programs offered this fall by the Laredo Community College Management Department. Two one-semester certificate programs, recently approved by the LCC Board of Trustees, are awaiting approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
For individuals seeking to start or enhance their small business, LCC will offer a Certificate in Small Business Management.
Persons who seek to advance or obtain office-level work in the transportation industry should consider the Certificate for the Logistics Technician.
Management Department Chair Ernestina C. Vela recommends both programs to students who want to acquire immediate job skills in these two areas.
“Students in the business management program will acquire valuable skills and the know-how to manage and maintain the finances of a small business. The program will also cover useful skills in customer relations, legal and social issues and marketing for a small business,” said Vela.
Students will be required to complete five college courses, including Small Business Management, Small Business Financing, Customer Relations, Legal and Social Environment of Business, and Principles of Marketing. In some courses, students will have the option to sign up for traditional or online classroom instruction.
The logistics technician certificate is ideal for individuals seeking entry-level work in an office within the warehouse and transportation industry, noted Vela.
“Students will gain a basic understanding of logistics, international business and trade, domestic and international transportation and an introduction to the general industry standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),” said Vela.
The certificate program also consists of five courses, including Introduction to Business and Trade, Introduction to Computing, Introduction to Business Logistics, Safety Program Management and Domestic and International Transportation Management.
Students will study the impact and dynamics of sociocultural, demographic, economic, technological and political/legal factors dealing with foreign trade. Computer applications and terminology, inventory management and control, and other factors of logistics will also be highlighted in the training. Some of the classes will also be available online to meet the training needs of working students.
Vela noted that students who complete the coursework for the logistics technician certificate can apply their college-level credit toward an Associate in Applied Science degree in Import/Export.
Early registration for the fall semester at LCC is in progress through August 9. For information about the Small Business Management or Logistics Technician certificate programs call the LCC Management Department at 721-5870.
