Ticket sales continue for LCC mariachi concert fundraiser
Tickets sales continue for a special concert at Laredo Community College featuring Grammy-nominated Jose Hernandez y Su Mariachi Sol de Mexico. LCC also continues to register middle and high school mariachi ensembles for master classes and a competition—all part of the college’s two-day Viva el Mariachi Festival and Competition, October 29-30.
The celebration will begin October 29 with instructional clinics for high school and middle school mariachi ensembles led by professional musicians from Sol De Mexico and Los Arrieros de Laredo. A competition will follow to select the top high school and middle school mariachi performers from the region. Event organizer Ruben Vargas says that many area and regional schools plan to send their mariachi student ensembles to the master classes and competition. Mariachi student musicians are not required to participate in the clinics as a group; they may attend the master classes on their own. For more information about the clinics and competition, contact Vargas by calling 721-5330. Sponsors of the master classes are the LCC Education Foundation and the City of Laredo.
The Mariachi Sol de Mexico concert will be held on Saturday, October 30 at the LCC Martinez Fine Arts Center. The opening act will be Los Arrieros de Laredo. The concert sponsor is Paul Young Auto Mall.
Billed as America's Premier Mariachi, Mariachi Sol de Mexico has performed around the world and their music has been featured on major motion pictures, such as "Don Juan de Marco." In 2001, the group was nominated for a Grammy for their CD, “Tequila con Limon.” They have recorded with the most respected and recognized names in the industry, including Juan Gabriel., Lucha Villa, Vicente Fernandez, Alejandro Fernandez, Rocio Durcal and Selena, among others.
Reserved seating is available for $35 and $50. A VIP concert pass, which includes an after-concert reception to meet and greet members of Mariachi Sol De Mexico is available for $125. Tickets may be purchased at the Bursar’s Office at LCC downtown and LCC South. Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Tickets are also available at Guadalupe Music Shop, located at 2101 Guadalupe. Proceeds benefit music education and student scholarships at LCC.
