High school graduates and college students will explore the opportunities to finance their higher education at the second annual, community-wide event, “Money for College-Financing Your Education,” on Tuesday, June 29.
The event is sponsored by Wells Fargo, and the Central/South Texas ENLACE Partnership (C-STEP), led locally by Laredo Community College. It will begin at 12 noon and close at 6 p.m. in the LCC de la Garza Building, room 101. Admission to the fair is free of charge and open to students, their parents and adults.
In addition to LCC, ENLACE and Wells Fargo Bank, other partners include Citibank, COSTEP, Department of Assistive Rehabilitative Services-Division for Rehabilitation Services, Educaid/Wachovia, International Bank of Commerce, Laredo Job Corps, LCC Community Education/Recruitment/Financial Aid/Special Populations, Employment Assistance Center, Laredo National Bank, South Texas Tech Prep and Texas Workforce Center.
The event will feature information on college programs, federal financial assistance, scholarships, grants, loans and other ways to get money for college.
Assistance will also be available on how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
Short presentations by financial experts will also be presented every half hour. Credit management, financial aid, and debt management will be covered among other topics.
Door prizes will be provided by event partners. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of Wells Fargo.
The national ENLACE program, which stands for ENgaging the LAtino Communities for Education, designated 13 communities in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, New York and Texas as recipients of $28 million in grant money to fund initiatives aimed at retaining and graduating Hispanic students from high school. The local goal is to increase the number of Hispanics attending and graduating from a four-year college or university.
ENLACE is derived from the Spanish word enlazar, which means to link or to weave together. The three key components of ENLACE are a common vision for a brighter future for Latino youth, collaborative work in coalitions and a focus on strengthening public school-university-community partnerships. ENLACE is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Houston Endowment, Inc.
