
LCC welcomes 14 students to Honors Program
Some of the region’s most gifted high school graduates were formally welcomed to the Laredo Community College Honors Program on Monday, June 14, in the de la Garza Building, room 101.
The college hosted a signing ceremony and reception to officially welcome the students into the LCC Honors Program, which offers full scholarship and challenging academic opportunities. This fall, the Honors Program will include admission for 14 graduated seniors from six Laredo high schools and Zapata.
They are: Jemima Baca (United South), Ruben Baldazo (United South), Judith Barrera (Alexander), Gladys A. Benavides (Martin), Jennifer Buckley (United South), Marla F. Chaires (Alexander), Nadia Escobedo (Nixon), Elsa B. Garza (Nixon), Jeremy Gonzalez (Nixon), Gabriela E. Lopez (United), Etelvina Mata (Zapata), Clarissa E. Rendon (Alexander), Julian Rios (St. Augustine), and Stephen R. Soliz (Zapata).
Established in 1988, the LCC Honors Program is recognized for giving the region’s top students an opportunity to excel in academics, community involvement, and to enhance their leadership potential.
The Honors Program at LCC offers a progressive course of study, which provides new challenges to students with exceptional abilities. Long-time math educator Anna Maria Mendiola is the program coordinator.
The Honors Program is affiliated with the National Collegiate Honors Council, the governing body for all college and university honors programs, including those in “Ivy League” schools.
“Through the LCC Honors Program, many of our graduates have been recruited by major universities,” says Mendiola.
