A new opportunity to seize a spot in the rewarding healthcare industry begins this fall at Laredo Community College. LCC is accepting applications from students preparing to enter the fall class of its Associate Degree Nursing and Vocational Nursing programs.
Dianna Miller, Dean of Health Sciences at LCC, explained that the college has extended its application period for fall 2004 admission to the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program to Monday, July 5.
The two-year ADN program at LCC prepares graduates for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). Students implement the nursing process with client care in a structured health care setting. The students participate in hands-on clinical experience at the two local hospitals and at other sites throughout the community.
Applications for admission to the program must be submitted to the LCC ADN Office, located in Lopez Nursing Building, room 126, before 5 p.m. on July 5. Admission to the program is competitive and based on specific admission criteria.
The one-year Vocational Nursing (VN) program has realigned its instructional calendar for students to enter class this fall. Applications from prospective students will be accepted through Wednesday, July 7, before 5 p.m. at the VN office, located in Lopez Nursing Building, room 104.
“By realigning our calendar, vocational nursing students will start their training this fall, instead of January of 2005. They will start their training in August of 2004 and complete it in August of 2005,” noted Miller.
The Vocational Nursing Program at LCC is a clinically-intensive one-year certificate program which offers classroom instruction and valuable clinical practice in four basic areas of nursing, including fundamentals, medical/surgical, maternity/pediatric and psychiatric. Upon graduation, the vocational nursing student is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).
Miller welcomes prospective students to consider enrolling this summer in a short-term course, RNSG 1193 Special Topics in Nurse: RN Training, which offers a brief overview of the nursing field.
“This is an ideal college credit level course to help the prospective students discover if they should pursue this particular healthcare field,” said Miller. “Admission is open to all students who are not enrolled in developmental classes.”
Two sections will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, July 19 to August 5. The morning class meets from 9 to 11:20. An afternoon section convenes from 1 to 3:20.
