Laredo Community College is among the nation’s leading colleges serving Hispanics who seek Associate’s degrees, according to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine.
In the March 2004 issue of the national magazine, LCC is ranked third nationwide among the Top 50 community and junior colleges awarding the most Associate’s degrees to Hispanics.
Based on federal statistics for 2001-2002, LCC awarded a total of 784 associate’s degrees, of which 747—or 95.28 percent—were conferred to Hispanics. LCC recorded the highest percentage of Hispanic graduates receiving associate’s degree, according to the Top 50 listing.
Also, only ten of the more than 50 community/junior colleges in Texas are listed in this ranking. No. 2 ranked El Paso Community College tied with LCC in the number of Hispanic graduates receiving an associate’s degree. Of 918 graduates, El Paso conferred degrees to 747 Hispanics.
LCC President Dr. Ramón H. Dovalina says that the rankings validate the college's mission to deliver a quality college education to the citizens of Laredo and the South Texas region.
"Laredo Community College is truly honored to earn such a notable distinction from Hispanic Outlook," says Dovalina. "As an institution of higher learning located in a predominantly Hispanic community, these rankings reinforce our commitment to shape lives for a prosperous future."
The Hispanic Outlook ranking was created using the latest data from the National Center for Education Statistics of the U.S. Department of Education. The figures are based on a 95 percent response from colleges conferring associates degrees to Hispanics during 2001-2002.
In the same issue, the magazine also ranks the Top 50 community and junior colleges by Hispanic enrollment. LCC is ranked 22nd in the nation.
