Lady Palominos garner national mention

Four Laredo Community College Lady Palominos were recently singled out for their talents on the court in a publication of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

LCC Head Coach Jennielle Strother noted that the outstanding play and impressive numbers posted in recent games by Palominos Theresa Lesenski, Krisyerkis Hernandez, Tara Van Brunt and Tania Balli Garza are highlighted in the final season edition of the CSTV (College Sports TV)/AVCA Facts on File for two-year colleges.  The numbers on the national update are reported by coaches of two-year community college volleyball programs.

Libero Lesenski was recognized under the 30-Dig Performance Club for achieving 40 digs in five games during a Nov. 6th conference match against Wharton, 34 digs in four games against Wharton on Oct. 23, and 30 digs in four games against Galveston on Oct. 29.  The freshman was also recognized for averaging 5.6 digs a game with 476 total digs.  Lesenski is tied for 2nd in digs with Chloe Cambiano of Alvin.  Brittany Yocum of Kankakee is first with 42 digs.

Other Palominos who made the 30-Dig Club included sophomores Tara Van Brunt with 39 digs during the Oct. 29th match against Galveston, and Krisyerkis Hernandez with 33 digs in the Nov. 6 match against Wharton.

In the 30-Kill Performance Club, Hernandez claimed solo honors for registering 31 kills in a five game battle against Wharton on Nov. 11.  No other player was reported by their coach to make the 30-Kill Club.

Freshman Tania Balli Garza also snared solo honors for making the Triple-Double Club for achieving double digits in kills (10), assists (15) and digs (24) during a three-game encounter with Galveston on Oct. 8.

Coach Strother expressed pride and joy for her talented players.

“It was a tough season, but there were players on this team that really produced some great numbers…and I am proud of their performance,” said Strother.

Lesenski is a native of La Porte.  Hernandez is a transfer from Hill College who hails from Venezuela.  Van Brunt attended United High School.  Garza is from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
