LCC Palominos in conference play this weekend

The Sports and Recreation Center at Laredo Community College will be the site of exciting intercollegiate sports action this weekend, courtesy of the LCC Palomino baseball and men’s and women’s tennis teams.

The action begins on Friday, April 2, at 11 a.m. when the LCC Lady Palominos host the Lee College Lady Rebels at the H.E. Butt Tennis Courts, located on the north side of the LCC campus.

The Lady Palominos, struggling on the court this season, will face their biggest challenger to date—Baytown’s Lee, ranked No. 1 nationally.  LCC is ranked 8th in the nation.

“The Lady Palominos are still searching for that win.  We have the potential to win some matches.  It’s just taking longer than expected,” said an optimistic Coach Jaime Donjuan.

On the men’s side, Coach Donjuan anticipates the most exciting match of the season.  For the first time this spring, the No. 1 Tyler Junior College Apaches will confront the No. 2 LCC on Palomino turf.  The game is set for Sunday, April 4, at 10 a.m. at the LCC H.E.B. Courts.

“The LCC-TJC conference game will be by far the most exciting match for Palomino fans to watch this year,” said Donjuan.  “LCC is excited to have the home court advantage and we invite the community to come out to the LCC campus and support the Palominos.  We feel very positive about this match.”

The LCC men’s team, 8-3 for the season, is currently riding high on a four-game winning streak.  Their biggest win of the season happened in February when LCC defeated the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.  LCC, a Division II school, had not defeated Division I UT-Pan American in 23 years.

Admission to the men’s and women’s tennis matches at LCC is free and open to students and the community.

Donjuan noted that the men’s team will travel to San Antonio on Thursday, April 1, to play a non-conference match against the St. Mary’s University Rattlers.

On the LCC Doc Sanchez baseball field, the LCC Palominos will meet the Alvin Community College Dolphins.  A doubleheader will be played on Saturday, April 3, beginning at 12 noon.  Alvin revisits LCC on Sunday, April 4, at 11 a.m.

LCC faces Alvin after recently completing a four-game series sweep of Austin Community College last weekend (March 27-28) at LCC.  The Laredo team is in Kerrville on March 31 for a non-conference game against Schreiner University.

During the LCC-Alvin weekend series, the Palominos and head coach John Maley invite all Little League players to attend the games.  Any Little Leaguer in uniform will have access to watch the games free of charge and will receive a coupon for a free soft drink.

Furthermore, Maley adds that the Little League team with the most members in uniform will receive passes for the remainder of the season.

Admission to the baseball games is free with a validated LCC ID card and kids 12 and under.  The admission fee for adults is $2.
