LCC Phi Theta Kappa breaks record again

The Laredo Community College Theta Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) recently inducted 35 new students to the prestigious international honor society for the spring 2004 semester.

The formal induction ceremony, hosted by the Laredo National Bank, opened with a procession led by PTK co-senior advisor José D. Compeán. The procession included the inductees, PTK Student President Christine Tijerina, PTK Treasurer Joe H. Garza, Vice-President of Instruction and Student Development Dr. Juan L. Maldonado and keynote speaker Vidal M. Treviño.

Maldonado, who served as master of ceremonies, congratulated the new members for achieving success in their academic studies.  He explained the purpose of the PTK honor society, to nurture academic excellence, provide leadership training, promote an intellectual climate for an interchange of ideas and ideals, and instill scholars with a desire for continuing their education.

Treviño, a former Laredo Independent School District superintendent, delivered the keynote address.

Treviño offered students inspiration and motivation, and praised them for being “the best of the best.”  He encouraged them to continue their quest to achieve high standards in their careers and lives.  Treviño received a standing ovation.

“I am pleased to present to you these candidates for membership in our Honor Society,” said PTK treasurer Joe H. Garza.   “These students have fulfilled all requirements for membership and have been selected because they have chosen scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship as their hallmarks. I recommend them for acceptance into the Theta Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of Two-Year Colleges.”

Inducted to the Phi Theta Kappa were Hacel Mayalen Arias, Sylvia L. Arredondo, David Francisco Balderas, Andrew Vincent Behrends, Araceli Marie Cadena, Jorge Eduardo Cantu, Cristina S. Castro, Nereida Chavarria, Ramona Elise Corpstein, Maria Amelia Cruz, Diana Deander, Ramin Emami, Meagan Nicole Everett, Cynthia Fernandez, Jesus Edmundo Garcia, Esequiel Garza, Alma G. Gonzalez, Karina Lyenette Gutierrez, Andromeda Misty Hall, Priscilla Martinez, Rhonda Lynn Martinez, Sylvia Melendez, Esteban Nicolas Nieto, Nancy Ortiz, Carmen G. Quesada, Omar Ramirez, Gabriela Roa, Pamela Vivian Rodriguez, Melissa Inez Saenz, Nestor Rafael Serrato, Jennifer Torres, Jesus Arturo Treviño, Norma Alicia Verastegui, Iram Addiel Vicharelli and Alejandro Alonso Villarreal.

During the induction, Phi Theta Kappa student president Christine Tijerina congratulated the inductees.  “You (inductees) will find among the members an atmosphere of scholarship, to which you must give of yourself so that the organization may be meaningful to you,” she said.

She continued, “Our ideals may be expressed in the words of Sir Francis Bacon in his essay, Of Studies.  ‘Studies serve for delight, for ornament and for ability.  Their chief use for delight is in privacy and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability is in the judgment and disposition of business.  Read not to contradict and confuse; not to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider.’”

As advisor Compeán read the names of the inductees, each approached the stage to sign the book of record.  After all 35 new members were introduced, president Tijerina and treasurer Garza began the candle lighting ceremony.  They administered the Phi Theta Kappa oath and opened their first meeting

The LCC Phi Theta Kappa Chapter holds meetings on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Kazen Center, room 221, during the fall and spring semesters.

Event organizers extended words of gratitude to Sharyn Jordan and the Laredo National Bank for hosting the ceremony.

Also thanked were Media Center coordinator Ceferino Izaguirre for technical audio support and Ricardo Iniguez, producer/director for LCC TV, for videotaping the ceremony.
