Red Ribbon Day at LCC on Wednesday

Laredo Community College will join thousands of citizens nationwide to promote on campus a drug-free lifestyle during the national observance of Red Ribbon Awareness Day on Wednesday, October 27.

LCC will present its annual Red Ribbon Day community fair from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the Kazen College Center.  The event is sponsored by the local Red Ribbon coalition, LCC Health Services, the Counseling Center and the Student Advisory Board.  The event is free and open to students and the public.

Eleven city, county, state, and federal community and law enforcement agencies will display information and distribute literature about their services and on drug abuse prevention.

“Laredo Community College and the Red Ribbon Coalition annually join forces to show our students and the community the detrimental effects of using illicit drugs,” said Health Services Coordinator Carmen Garcia.

Among agencies that scheduled to participate are the Webb County Drug Enforcement Agency, Laredo Crime Stoppers, Laredo Health Department, South Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Stop Child Abuse and Neglect, Texas Department of Transportation, Webb County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Border Patrol, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Gregory’s Offender Education Services, and the Buena Salud.

The Red Ribbon campaign was launched in memory of DEA agent Enrique Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985.  The red ribbon has become the symbol for the nation’s war against drugs.
