LCC Opera Workshop to present School House Rock Live!
A pop culture phenomenon is coming to the Laredo stage this month as part of the Laredo Community College Opera Workshop.
LCC will offer four evening shows of the fun and educational musical, “School House Rock Live!” from October 20 to 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the LCC Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center. The theater arts ensemble will also offer a special matinee performance for Laredo ISD and United ISD school children on Tuesday, October 19, at 10:30 a.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center. General admission for the evening shows is $5 per person. The matinee performance for school children is $2. For group seating arrangements or more information about the matinee show, call 721-5330.
Under the direction of Dr. Joseph C. Crabtree, Department Chair of the Music and Dance Department, the LCC Opera Workshop will present the musical, which is based on the Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever, tuneful songs.
“Children just discovering the TV series or ‘Generation X-ers’ seeking a taste of nostalgia will delight in this family-friendly entertainment that is good, clean and educational fun,” said Crabree.
The musical centers on Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher worried about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when suddenly various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. “Schoolhouse Rock” includes popular songs such as “Just A Bill,” “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly” and “Conjunction Junction.”
