La Pequeña Barraca Spanish Club is a Laredo Community College student organization known well for its commitment to preserving Hispanic culture and tradition. But most recently, the collegians became big brothers and sisters to a group of Nuevo Laredo children.
In observance of April’s Dia del Niño (Day of the Young Child), the college student group chose to sponsor a school supply drive to collect items—such as bond paper, crayons, notebooks, rulers, pencils and glue—from classmates, faculty and staff on campus. The goal was to collect enough donations to benefit the children who reside at Monsignor Enrique Tomas Lozano Orphanage in Nuevo Laredo.
Event organizers say that the benefit was a success.
“La Pequeña Barraca received an overwhelming response from the college, particularly the psychology/sociology classes, the Arts and Sciences Division, and the departments of English, Reading, Foreign Languages, Kinesiology and Mathematics, among others,” said Mirna Alvarez, a long-time leader in the student organization.
Through the generosity of the college campus, nine large boxes of school supplies were collected, including 240 boxes of crayons, 105 bottles of glue, 68 rulers, 75 notebooks and 994 pencils, among many other items.
Several members of the student club traveled to Nuevo Laredo to deliver the school goods to the young children. Among them were Rosa Ramos, Consuelo Rodriguez, Jose Alfredo Pulido, Juanita Soto, Genoveva Ayala, Alma Slown, Karina Alvarez, Heidi Carrillo, Veronica Martinez, Mirna Alvarez, Sergio Aradillas and co-sponsor Cynthia Aradillas.
As a special treat, one club member bought a cake for 50 people to share with the children.
“The members of the Spanish Club were filled with emotion as they delivered the supplies to the children at the orphanage,” said Alvarez. “Club members interacted and played games with the children.”
“The children expressed their gratitude and contentment for the donations the LCC student club presented to them,” she added.
The Spanish Club is also sponsored by Foreign Languages Department Chair Rosalinda Herrera and ENSL/Spanish Instructor Rafael Hernandez.
