LCC eases rules for students to ‘Self Advise’

Laredo Community College has made it easier for students to select the courses they need to satisfy their academic career goals, according to Felix Gamez, LCC Director of Admissions and Records.

“Self Advised students have an advantage because they can register before anyone else, can select the courses they want before they are filled, and they can register on the phone or through a web portal without setting foot on campus,” Gamez said.

Now, the rules to be considered “self advised” have been relaxed, allowing students with only nine college level hours to become eligible, Gamez said.

The new rules allow all students who have earned at least nine college level hours, have declared their academic major, and have satisfied the new Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements to be automatically considered Self Advised. Early registration for LCC’s upcoming Summer Session I is open to Self Advised students from April 5 through May 6 by calling 721-5100 (OLÉ Phone) or logging to http:/ole.laredo.edu (OLÉ Web).

The TSI is a new state-mandated program which replaces the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) law.

According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the TSI requires students to be tested in reading, writing and math skills prior to enrolling in college, and for their placement in courses to be based on these test results.
