LCC Show Band Spring Concert set for Sunday

The Laredo Community College Show Band will put some “rhythm in your life” on Sunday, April 25, with a spring jazz concert beginning at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center.  The program is free and open to the public.

Artistic Director/Conductor for the LCC Show Band is José D. Compeán, who established the ensemble in the fall of 1978. The concert is the culmination of many hours of hard work on the part of the student members of the LCC Show Band.  In observance of National Jazz Appreciation Month, the Show Band will pay tribute to jazz music.

Celebrating his thirty-second year in music education, Maestro Compeán still feels the energy and excitement of his first year teaching.

“The men and women who comprise the LCC Show Band are talented and very dedicated to maintaining a high level of musical performance; their energy and enthusiasm is contagious.   I am elated that I have the opportunity to work with such musically gifted students,” stated José D.  Compeán.

The Show Band will feature popular local vocalist, Tricia Cortez.  Ms. Cortez is well known in the Laredo music scene.

“In spite of her full-time job with the Laredo Morning Times, she still makes time to perform for many social and charitable organizations,” explained Compeán.

The program will begin with “Spain,” a jazz rock piece written by the great jazz pianist/composer Chick Corea.   The program will include the following jazz selections:  “Sho’ Nuff,” written for the Dallas Jazz Orchestra by Pete Vollmers; “Manteca” and “Night In Tunisia,” written by jazz great Dizzy Gillespie.  The Show Band repertoire includes selections from the jazz-salsa genre, “Oye Como Va” - Tito Puente and Robert Skiles’ (Beto and the Fairlanes) version of “Sesos de Huesos.”

The Show Band has also prepared music selections from a collection of Hispanic ballads of the Golden Era.  Guest artist Tricia Cortez will be featured on “Frenesi” and “Perfidia” written by Alberto Domingues.  Linda Ronstadt, international renowned artist, recorded the Latin masterpieces in 1992.

In addition, Cortez will join the LCC Show Band to sing: “The Game Of Love,” composed by Alexander/Nowels; Norah Jones’ “Don’t Know Why,” written by Harris and Frank Sinatra’s version of “I’ve Got The World On a String,” written by H. Arlen.

The program culminates with Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood,” written by Joe Garland, “String Of Pearls,” composed by Jerry Gray and drummer extraordinaire Gene Krupa’s  version of “Sing, Sing, Sing,” written by Louis Prima.  The LCC Fight Song, written by José “Pepe” Compeán in 1948, will conclude the program.

Members of the LCC Show Band include: guest vocalist – Tricia Cortez, Hacel Arias – flute, Marco Maldonado - alto and baritone saxophone, and guest artist Joe D. Compeán - soprano, alto and tenor saxophone.   Also performing with the group are David Enriques – alto saxophone, and Adam Hernandez - tenor saxophone.  Playing lead trumpet is Richard W. Anderson, Gilbert Gomez – trumpet and José “Pepe” Compeán – trumpet.

Playing trombone is Joshua Chavez and on tuba is Eliborio Lopez, Jr.  The rhythm section includes: Jesus Vasquez – piano/keyboards, Joe Garza – electric guitar, Albert Salazar - electric bass and Carlos “Curly” Castillo – drum set.

The LCC Show Band has performed for such auspicious occasions as the grand opening ceremonies of the Laredo International Airport, Laredo Public Library and the LCC Sports and Recreation Center.  Another notable performance occurred while the College celebrated its 50th anniversary, the Show Band represented the College during the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association’s Grand Parade.  The group also opened for Little Joe Y La Familia concert during LCC’s first Back to School concert in January 2004 and most recently the Grand Opening Ceremonies for the LCC South campus on April 16.

Music Director Compeán is always looking for new members to join the LCC Show Band.   Any student or community member wishing to perform with the Show Band may contact José D. Compeán at 721-5304 or send an e-mail to jdc@laredo.edu.
