LCC Opera Workshop to present School House Rock Live!
The Laredo Community College Opera Workshop is bringing a cherished educational cartoon series from the seventies to life on the Laredo stage when it presents “School House Rock Live!” October 20 to 23 at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center.
The LCC Opera Workshop, in conjunction with the LCC Music and Dance Department and the City of Laredo, will offer four evening shows at 7:30 p.m. from October 20 to 23.
The college theater arts ensemble will also offer a special matinee performance for Laredo ISD and United ISD school children on Tuesday, October 19, at 10:30 a.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center.
General admission for the evening shows is $5 per person. The matinee performance for school children is $2. For group seating arrangements or more information about the matinee show, call 721-5330.
Under the direction of Dr. Joseph C. Crabtree, Department Chair of the Music and Dance Department, the LCC Opera Workshop will present the musical, based on the Emmy Award-winning ABC TV Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever, tuneful songs, including “Conjunction Junction, What’s Your Function,” “Interjections,” “Interplanet Janet” and “Three Is A Magic Number.”
“Children just discovering the TV series or ‘Generation X-ers’ seeking a taste of nostalgia will delight in this family-friendly entertainment that is good, clean and educational fun,” said Crabtree.
The musical centers on Tom, a nerve-wracked schoolteacher worried about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when suddenly various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. “Schoolhouse Rock” includes popular songs such as “Just A Bill,” “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly” and “Conjunction Junction.”
