A cherished Saturday morning cartoon series that entertained and educated many Generation X-ers in the 1970s is coming life on the Laredo Community College stage this week.
The LCC Opera Workshop presents “School House Rock Live!” October 20 to 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center. A sold-out matinee performance for Laredo ISD and United ISD school children is set for Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 10:30 a.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center.
General admission for the evening shows is $5 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door.
Under the direction of Dr. Joseph C. Crabtree, Department Chair of the Music and Dance Department, the LCC Opera Workshop will present the musical, based on the Emmy Award-winning ABC TV Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever, tuneful songs, including “Conjunction Junction, What’s Your Function,” “Interjections,” “Interplanet Janet” and “Three Is A Magic Number.”
“Children just discovering the TV series or ‘Generation X-ers’ seeking a taste of nostalgia will delight in this family-friendly entertainment that is good, clean and educational fun,” said Crabtree.
The musical centers on Tom, a nerve-wracked schoolteacher worried about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when suddenly various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. “Schoolhouse Rock” includes popular songs such as “Just A Bill,” “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly” and “Conjunction Junction.”
“School House Rock Live!” is presented by the LCC Opera Workshop, in conjunction with the LCC Music and Dance Department and the City of Laredo.
