LCC
dedicates Fine Arts Resource Library
Laredo Community College students will have an additional resource to advance their studies in the performing arts. Students and the community are invited to attend a special dedication ceremony on Tuesday, January 27, at 4 p.m. for the Alfonse Siros Memorial Resource Library.
Located within the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, the new Resource Library was created to provide faculty with added educational tools for the benefit of music, dance, art and theater students.
The facility will contain hundreds of audio and visual materials, and literature which faculty members will be able to utilize in their classrooms.
The library is named in memory of Alfonse Siros, Jr. LCC received a pledge of $100,000 from the Alfonse Siros Trust, from which $70,000 has been received.
Siros was the son of French and German immigrants Alfonse Honore Sirot and Henriette Schaper. The family name changed to Siros when they arrived in U.S.
The family, which came to Laredo during the establishment of railroad trade with Mexico in 1881, operated the Siros Hardware Store on Hidalgo Street in Downtown Laredo. In the 1980’s, the business became the successful sporting goods store it is today.
A graduate of Texas A&M University and a World War I veteran, Siros served on various local civic organizations, including the Border Olympics. He continued to study astronomy and photography and traveled to pursue these interests for many years.
Siros died in 1986 after which a memorial trust was established in order to continue his work in the community.
The Alfonse Siros Trust has contributed to the Salvation Army, Bethany House, local churches, the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center, Cancer Patient Services, local food banks and the boy scouts.
His sister Lou Vena Siros, a long-time instructor at LJC, also created a trust to support educational causes in Laredo and her trust today provides scholarships to Laredo Community College students.
