Staying ‘safe and sober’ focus of LCC event

Spring break is a weeklong vacation from books and studies for many students.

On Wednesday, March 10, Laredo Community College students will have an opportunity to learn that aside from the fun, there are many dangers and life-threatening situations which may occur during their break from studies.

LCC hopes to keep students safe and sober with its annual Spring Break fair and celebration on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the Kazen College Center.  Admission is free and open to students and the public.

The event is sponsored each year by LCC Health Services, Counseling Center and the Student Advisory Board, in conjunction with the Traffic Safety Section of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The Safe and Sober celebration will include a Community Service Agency Fair which will promote safety during spring break.  Some 11 federal, state and local agencies will participate.

Students will also be able to sample a free, non-alcoholic mocktail.  The LCC Student Advisory Board will be offering the tropical-flavored beverage from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the Kazen Lobby.

At 12 noon, the lights in the Kazen College Center will be dimmed for a moment of silence in memory of those killed in alcohol or drug-related accidents each year.

Agencies participating in this year’s Safe and Sober event include: City of Laredo Health Department, U.S. Border Patrol, City of Laredo Police Department’s El Protector, Laredo Crime Stoppers, Webb County Sheriff’s Department, South Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, Texas Department of Transportation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Serving Children and Adolescent Needs, Association Advancement Mexican Americans, and Union Pacific Railroad.

The celebration will also include the “Happy Hour” comedy show presented by national campus entertainer Bernie McGrenahan at 1 p.m. in the student center.  The comic’s informative and entertaining program on the dangers of excessive drinking is popular with students nationwide.

The LCC campus will be closed for spring break from March 15 to 21.  Classes resume on Monday, March 22.

For more information about the Safe and Sober Celebration, contact the LCC Health Services office by calling 721-5189.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
