LCC adds ticket outlets for Mariachi Sol concert

Laredo Community College has added more locations for mariachi music fans to purchase their tickets for the special scholarship benefit concert featuring Grammy-nominated Jose Hernandez y Su Mariachi Sol de Mexico on October 30.

Orchestra-level tickets, priced at $50/person, are now available at Guadalupe Music Shop, 2101 Guadalupe; Laredo Mini Mart, 3810 E. Saunders; San Ramon Record Shop, 512 Guadalupe; Rio Bravo Music Store, 1407 Centeno; and Movie Palace Video, 2717 Loop 20.

The Mariachi Sol de Mexico concert will be held on October 30 at the LCC Martinez Fine Arts Center.  The opening act will be Los Arrieros de Laredo.  The concert sponsor is Paul Young Auto Mall.

Billed as America's Premier Mariachi, Mariachi Sol de Mexico has performed around the world and their music has been featured on major motion pictures, such as "Don Juan de Marco."  In 2001, the group was nominated for a Grammy for their CD, “Tequila con Limon.”  They have recorded with the most respected and recognized names in the industry, including Juan Gabriel., Lucha Villa, Vicente Fernandez, Alejandro Fernandez, Rocio Durcal and Selena, among others.  The group is scheduled to perform in Orlando at Walt Disney World prior to their Laredo performance.

Reserved seating is available for $35 and $50.  A VIP concert pass, which includes an after-concert reception to meet and greet members of Mariachi Sol De Mexico is available for $125.  Tickets for all seating levels may be purchased at the LCC Bursar’s Office.  Major credit cards are accepted, including ticket orders by phone.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Proceeds benefit music education and student scholarships at LCC.

LCC also continues to register middle and high school mariachi ensembles for master classes and a competition—all part of the college’s two-day Viva el Mariachi Festival and Competition, October 29-30.

Porter, Valley View, McAllen Memorial and Port Isabel are among the high schools that will send their mariachi ensembles to participate in workshops led by professional musicians from Sol De Mexico and Los Arrieros de Laredo.  The same schools will also compete for the coveted honor of best mariachi ensemble in the region.

Event organizer Ruben Vargas encourages local and area schools to participate in the master classes and competition.  Mariachi student musicians are not required to participate in the clinics as a group; they may attend the master classes on their own.  For more information, contact Vargas by calling 721-5330.  Sponsors of the master classes are the LCC Education Foundation and the City of Laredo.
