LCC hosts Spanish Poetry Competition on Friday

Laredo Community College students will demonstrate their creative and oratory talents in the Spanish language during the 23rd annual LCC Spanish Poetry Competition on Friday, April 2.

Sponsored by the LCC Foreign Languages Department, the competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Adkins Building Arena Theater.  Admission is free and open to students and the public.

In celebration of National Poetry Month in Laredo, LCC hosts the yearly competition to promote the Hispanic culture and highlight the outstanding talents of students, says Rosalinda G. Herrera, Foreign Languages Chairperson and event organizer.

Twelve LCC students are scheduled to participate in the event, including students in Spanish, English as a second language and adult education classes.

“The participating students are expected to recite poems from famous Spanish and Mexican authors,” says Herrera.

Judges will be Spanish TV personalities Marisa Limon and Lupita Benavides and retired foreign languages instructor Marie Rollin.  Musical entertainment will be provided by the LCC students.

First, second, third and fourth place trophies will be awarded to the winners of the competition.
