Registration is underway at Laredo Community College for a popular speech class that will be taught online on the World Wide Web.
Now through October 29, students can register for the online course, SPCH1311 Fundamentals of Speech Communication, which starts October 26 and continues through December 21.
The course is part of LCC’s Core Curriculum, which prepares students for a bachelor’s degree and contains courses which transfer to any state university.
The speech class focuses on becoming an effective communicator, says Katie McLaughlin, instructor of the online class.
“Students will learn how to communicate with others in interpersonal, group and public speaking context,” says McLaughlin, who joined LCC this fall.
She adds that students will be administered three tests and the final examination online. They will be required to report to campus only once for a speech presentation during the term’s duration.
McLaughlin holds a Master’s degree in Speech Communication from Texas State University in San Marcos. Prior to her arrival at LCC, she taught the SPCH1311 course at TSU for over two years.
Jerry Garza, Director of Distance Learning at LCC, says that the SPCH1311 class is a popular course with students.
“SPCH1311 is typically the first course to close each term during the registration process. Laredo Community College is utilizing the welcome addition of Instructor McLaughlin to satisfy a huge demand for this course,” notes Garza.
Garza encourages students to register for this class by October 30 at the Admissions/Registration Office at the LCC main or south campuses. The in-district tuition fee for the three-hour college credit course is $162. Students may pay with major credit cards at the LCC Bursar’s Office at either campus. Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
