LCC to offer free ESL class for TANF clients

Laredo Community College will offer a free English as a Second Language (ESL) course on campus for adults who desire to learn or improve their English language skills.

“Through the support of the Texas Education Agency, the class is offered free of charge to eligible clients of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families or TANF,” said Hector Soliz of the LCC Adult Education Department.

The ESL course is open to beginning and advanced students, said Soliz.  Morning classes will be offered beginning on September 7 at LCC South, 5500 South Zapata Highway.  It will continue throughout the duration of the college’s spring 2005 semester which ends in May.

Students will meet three days out of each week, including two classroom days of ESL instruction and one day of computer skills instruction.

To qualify for the free classes, the students must be adults with children (under 18 years of age) who receive state or federal assistance in the form of TANF, food stamps, CHIPS, Medicaid, or the Free/Reduced Meal program.

Prior to participating in class, students must participate in a free three-day orientation program which will offer testing to determine their level of English language skills, campus tours, workshops on study techniques and motivational talks.  “Participants are required to attend all three days of this free workshop,” emphasized Soliz.  The workshop will be from August 17 to 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

For more information, contact Hector Soliz at the LCC Adult Education Program by calling 794-4539 or 721-5436 or by e-mail hsoliz@laredo.edu.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
