
Laredo Community College advances to the quarterfinals after winning five singles and two doubles in the second round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Championship in Plano, Texas Tuesday, May 11. Tournament action was suspended in the afternoon due to rain.
In singles, the winners for LCC included Alex Ortega, 6-2, 6-1 against Mississippi Gulf; Jorge Anda, 6-4, 6-0 against Wallace State; Sky Laws, 6-4, 6-2 against Seminole State; Nate Avila, 6-1, 6-0 against Independence C.C.; and Rafael Zurita, 6-0, 6-1 against Lakeland College. Todd Hendricks won the first game against Seminole State 6-3, before losing 7-5 and 4-1. He continues in consolation.
In doubles, the winners for LCC included Anda/Zurita, 6-0, 6-0 against Kalamazoo Valley C.C.; and Avila/Laws, 6-4, 6-2 against Lewis and Clark C.C.
Rain halted the doubles of Ortega and Hendricks in flight one. All games are expected to continue Wednesday, May 12.
The LCC men’s tennis team is led by Coach Jaime Donjuan.
