LCC wins; enters national semifinals

 

PLANO - Laredo Community College won all six singles flights and all four doubles flights on May 12 to enter the semifinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Championship.

In singles, the winners for LCC included Alex Ortega, 6-4, 6-1 against a player from Vincennes University; Jorge Anda, 6-4, 6-1 against Barton College; Sky Laws, 6-2, 6-4 against Central Alabama C.C.; Nathaniel Avila, 6-0, 6-1 against Wallace State; and Rafael Zurita, 6-2, 6-2 against Wallace State.   In consolation, Todd Hendricks defeated Mesa C.C., 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles, Ortega/Hendricks defeated Mississippi Gulf in a match that was suspended on Tuesday due to rain.

Other LCC winners in today’s doubles flights included Ortega/Hendricks, 6-4, 6-2 against Vincennes; Anda/Zurita, 6-0, 6-2 against Wallace; and Avila/Laws, 6-4, 6-4 against Mesa.

LCC Head Tennis Coach Jaime Donjuan is proud of his team’s accomplishments and looks forward to the challenges that await Laredo’s team on May 13.  He indicated that Tyler Junior College and Georgia Perimeter are currently tied for first place.  LCC is in second place.

“Thursday’s semifinals will be a big day for Laredo Community College, as several team members confront opponents from Tyler and Georgia Perimeter,” explained Donjuan.
