The nationally ranked tennis team of Laredo Community College, led by Coach Jaime Donjuan, launched its spring 2004 season on the road in a match against the University of Texas at San Antonio on Saturday, February 7.
The LCC Palomino men’s team, ranked second in the nation, faced the NCAA Division I UTSA Roadrunners on February 7 at 3 p.m. in San Antonio. LCC lost to UTSA, 6-1.
Coach Donjuan mentioned that his top six players got to play on the court. They included sophomores Jorge Anda, Rafael Zurita and Nate Avila. Also, playing for LCC were freshmen Sky Laws, Alex Ortega and Todd Hendricks.
"Overall, I was pleased with the effort the team displayed on the court playing against a four-year university-level team. Unfortunately, there were several factors, including a player injury, that prevented the team from pulling through for a win."
Coach Donjuan has entered his seventh season with an experienced No.2 national men's and a No. 7 national women's tennis teams. The native Texan, who took over the tennis team in 1997, has coached a No. 1 nationally ranked doubles team and 4 All-Americans.
The LCC Tennis Team has scheduled four games to be played at the H.E. Butt Tennis Courts at the LCC Sports and Recreation Center. The first local game is set for Wednesday, March 3, at 1 p.m. against St. Mary’s University of San Antonio. Both the men’s and women’s teams are set to play.
All games on the LCC campus are free of charge to students and the public.
