
The deadline to file for a place on the Laredo Community College trustee election ballot will be Monday, March 15 before 5 p.m.
Applications are available from Nora Stewart, LCC Internal Auditor and the college’s presiding officer for elections. Deadlines and forms are also available online at www.laredo.edu/elections. The elections officer is located in the LCC Administration Annex Building, room 101, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
Vacancies on the nine member board include: Position 1, currently held by Cynthia Mares; Position 2, currently held by Dr. Leonides G. Cigarroa, Jr.; and Position 3, currently held by Sabas Zapata, III.
The LCC District will hold the election on Saturday, May 15.
Residents of the LCC college district, which encompasses the city limits of Laredo, can file to become a candidate if they meet the following criteria:
- Must be a registered voter.
- Must reside within the Laredo Community College District.
- Must take proper oath of office and serve as trustee without compensation.
A campaign treasurer must also be appointed and documents filed before any contributions are accepted or expenditures are made on behalf of a candidate.
Trustees are elected to six-year, staggered terms. The Board meets monthly, holds special meetings, and committee meetings. The Board’s responsibilities are to:
- set the policies or regulations under which LCC is to be operated;
- select the President of the College and adopt regulations pertaining to the duties and responsibilities of the executive, administrative, classified and instructional staff;
- set the tax rate and approve the fiscal operating budget;
- appoint the College attorney, architect, fiscal agent, audit firm, and bank depository; and
- bear the legal responsibility and authority for all aspects of the College’s operation.
