Three trustees sworn to LCC Board

Leonides G. Cigarroa, Jr., Cynthia Mares and Mercurio Martinez were formally installed as members of the Laredo Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday, June 24.

The ceremony was held at the beginning of the monthly meeting of the College Board on June 24 in Laird Hall, room 124. The promissory oath for the newly elected trustees was administered by Judge Danny Valdez.

Dr. Cigarroa was appointed to the Board in December 2001 to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of a trustee.  In May of 2002, Cigarroa was elected to serve the remainder of his predecessor’s unexpired term through 2004.  Cigarroa operates a family practice clinic.

Ms. Mares, elected to the Board in May of 1992, has completed two terms as trustee, including the position of secretary.  She is Executive Director of the Webb County Community Action Agency.

Mr. Martinez is a familiar face to the LCC Board, having previously served as President of the joint Laredo ISD/LCC Board of Trustees from 1973 to 1975.  He has over 15 years experience as an educator and banker.  Martinez also has 20 years experience serving in elected office, including the positions of city councilman and Webb County Judge.

LCC held an election on May 15 to fill three vacancies on the LCC Board.  In Place 1, incumbent Mares ran unopposed and won with 4,841 votes.  In Place 2, incumbent Cigarroa ran unopposed and won with 4,971 votes.  In Place 3, which was vacated by Sabas Zapata, III, Martinez won with 3,557 votes; his opponent, Tony Arce, Jr., received 2,921 votes.
