
Laredo Community College will launch ticket sales for a major scholarship benefit with a cultural flair that will include lively mariachi music and cool refreshments on Monday, September 13.
Mariachi music fans are invited to a Twilight Ticket Sale from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center at the LCC downtown campus. Tickets for a special concert on October 30 at LCC, featuring Grammy-nominated Mariachi Sol De Mexico de Jose Hernandez, will be sold at the ticket box inside the Martinez Fine Arts Center. The concert is sponsored by Paul Young Auto Mall. Proceeds from the concert will support the LCC Music program and scholarships for music students.
As part of the celebration for the ticket sale launch, the community will have an opportunity to enjoy an evening serenade under the stars by LCC’s popular Mariachi Palomino; the mini-concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Complimentary aguas frescas will be served.
The concert with Jose Hernandez y su mariachi Sol De Mexico is part of a two-day college festival and competition billed as “Viva el Mariachi!” on October 29 and 30 at the LCC Martinez Fine Arts Center.
The celebration will begin October 29 with instructional clinics for high school and middle school mariachi ensembles led by professional musicians from Sol De Mexico and Los Arrieros de Laredo. A competition will follow to select the top high school and middle mariachi performers from the region.
The event will cap off with an important scholarship benefit featuring Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez on October 30 at 7 p.m. at the Martinez Fine Arts Center. Tickets for the concert include reserved seats for $35 and $50. A VIP concert pass, which includes an after-concert reception to meet and greet Mariachi Sol De Mexico is available for $125.
Billed as the “Nation’s Premier Mariachi,” Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez has recorded with major performing artists, including Vicente Fernandez, Juan Gabriel, Selena, Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, Lucha Villa, Lola Beltran, Rocio Durcal and Los Jaguares, among others. The Mariachi has performed in prestigious venues across the world, including Spain, Vina del Mar, Chile, the Bahamas, and Hawaii.
Mariachi Sol de Mexico is also the first mariachi ever to perform in the Socialist countries of China and North Korea. It was also the first mariachi group to be nominated for a Grammy in 2001.
Hernandez has contributed to various motion picture soundtracks, including the movies “Old Gringo,” “American Me,” and “Don Juan de Marco.” At the 68th Academy Awards, Hernandez performed with recording artist Bryan Adams for the nominated song “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman,” performed at the first annual Latin Grammy’s with Alejandro Fernandez and contributed to the soundtrack of the Universal movie, “Seabiscuit.”
Tickets for the college’s “Viva El Mariachi” Festival and Competition will continue to be sold at the LCC Bursar’s Office, located in Memorial Hall (formerly University Hall), room 121. Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Tickets will also be available at Guadalupe Music Shop, located at 2101 Guadalupe.
