Miguel Banuelos, a Laredo Community College Upward Bound student, is attending a six-week math and science program at Texas A&M University in Kingsville.
Banuelos, a junior at Nixon High School next fall, was one of 55 students selected from a statewide pool of applicants to attend the university’s upward bound program from June 6 to July 15.
During his six week stay at Kingsville, Banuelos will participate in ongoing campus research studies in the areas of mathematics, science and computer technology.
“Admission to the Texas A&M Kingsville math and science program is highly selective,” explained Gerardo Martinez, LCC Upward Bound Director. “Only a select few students are chosen from Upward Bound programs across the state.”
The participating students will engage in a number of activities that help enhance their social and academic skills, including career exploration, cultural activities, campus visits, cultural/educational field trips and recreational activities and games.
The initiative is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
Upward Bound is specifically designed for high school students whose parents do not hold a four-year bachelor’s degree and are college-bound or meet limited income guidelines.
The program is geared for students who are interested in improving their academic skills and who plan to pursue a college education.
