sought for LCC Upward Bound
This week, the Upward Bound Program at Laredo Community College is enlisting new members who are high school freshmen and sophomores.
The federally funded college prep program is geared to students who want to improve their academic skills and plan to pursue a college education. It is specifically designed for students whose parents do not hold a four-year bachelor’s degree and meet limited income guidelines.
Registration is in progress through Jan. 22 in the Lerma-Pena Learning Center, room 120, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m.
The year-round program, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to enhance student academic and social skills to succeed in college.
The program’s objectives are to improve students’ high school grade point average, raise their self-esteem, increase standardized test scores, provide assistance in applying for admission to a college, and assist in applying for financial aid and college scholarships.
The Upward Bound program will introduce participants to higher education through several trips to major state universities.
The program goals are met by student participation in a year-round learning component, which includes cultural and recreational field trips, a simulated college environment, academic instruction and tutoring, career awareness activities, plus personal and group counseling, among other things.
LCC Upward Bound participants are eligible to use the LCC Yeary Library, Lerma-Peña Learning Center, and other college facilities.
At least one parent must accompany the student during registration. Applicants should bring their birth certificate, social security card, parents’ most recent 1040 income tax forms, a utility bill, and most recent report card with official transcript.
Upward
Bound is open to LISD and UISD high school students. Students who are interested
in joining Upward Bound are encouraged to apply immediately since enrollment is
limited.
