Laredo Community College graduates now have more opportunities to pursue higher degrees at the University of Texas-Pan American.
Leaders of both higher education institutions convened at the LCC Kazen Center on March 4 to sign a new Dual Admissions Agreement.
The new educational partnership will enhance the ability for LCC graduates to experience a seamless transition toward the successful completion of a bachelor’s degree at UTPA.
“Laredo Community College is committed to providing a quality education to its students—a learning experience that will open greater educational opportunities after graduation,” said Dr. Juan L. Maldonado, Vice-President for Instruction and Student Development at LCC.
“LCC is pleased to join forces with the University of Texas-Pan American in the effort to deliver exceptional educational opportunities for our students,” added Maldonado.
The agreement will allow students to gain dual admission to UTPA upon enrolling at LCC and meeting the appropriate requirements. LCC graduates must complete their Associate’s degree with a 2.0 or higher GPA (grade point average). Some UTPA academic departments may require all students to enter their programs with a higher GPA. LCC graduates may also enter UTPA “with distinction” if they rank in the top 10 percent of their class.
LCC and UTPA will work together to inform LCC students at the freshman level about the dual admissions program. UTPA will then provide supportive materials to help create a seamless transfer process for the LCC graduate.
College freshmen who show interest in the dual admissions program will be offered a degree plan that begins at LCC.
Additionally, UTPA will provide Phi Theta Kappa and merit transfer scholarships to selected students from LCC.
LCC students who are interested in learning more about the LCC-UTPA Dual Admissions program may contact the LCC Counseling Center at 721-5135. Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Laredo Community College hosted a signing ceremony on March 4 to launch a new educational partnership with the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. The agreement, signed by the presidents of both educational institutions, will enhance the ability for LCC graduates to transfer to UTPA without the loss of college credit transfer hours. On hand at the ceremony held in the Kazen Center were, from left, seated, LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina, LCC Counseling/Assessment Director Jesse Porras, LCC Vice President for Instruction and Student Development Dr. Juan L. Maldonado, UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez; standing, Sam Diaz, assistant director of UTPA New Student and Visitors Services, and Dr. John Edwards, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services.
