COURSE DESCRIPTION: |
Effect of computers on society,
the history and use of computers, computer applications in various segmen=
ts
of society, programming concepts, and hardware and software terminology. =
This
course may not be applied towards a computer science major or minor.
Laboratory time is scheduled to enable the student to learn to use the
computer as a tool. |

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: |

development of computer hardware which has led to modern computing device=

by computer software in the history of the computing industry. 4. Provide an over=
view
of the operation of a computer system and discuss the most popular types =

software currently being used. 5. &nbs=

how data is read, stored, processed and maintained. 6. &nbs=

the applications suitable for processing on a computer and discriminate
between those applications for which a computer could be considered and t=

applications which could not use a computer to accomplish their tasks. 7. &nbs=

many of the widely used data entry devices and their functions. 8. Identify =

different types of output which can be obtained from a computer and the
factors which must be considered to obtain output most useful to the user=

Identify=

describe the hardware devices and software techniques that allow users to
interact with personal computers, minicomputers and mainframes. 10. Understand the internal operation of a computer
system. 11. List the various types of
auxiliary storage devices and media that are available and discuss the
characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of each. 12. Understand
how data and files are organized and accessed and the concept of how data=

stored and accessed in a database. 13. Have a basic understanding of dat=
a communications. 14. Identify and describe the many
languages in use today. 15. Describe an operating syste=
m, the
process that occurs when an interpreter is used and identify the processi=

and output of a compiler. 16. Describe in detail the step=

ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS: |
ONLINE STUDENT ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES Responsibility for class
attendance rests with the student. Students
are required to log in and participate in their respective online classes=
to
remain enrolled. Students will be dropped from the class roster by the
instructor according to College Attendance Regulations; however, a student
may be reinstated by the Vice-President of Instruction upon the
recommendation of the instructor(s) and an agreement from the student to =
make
up all of the missed assignments, lab times and/or tests. &nbs=
p; Students will be dropped after being absent: =
a. <=
/span>Students will be dropped with a “W”
for Unexcused absences - failure to log-in to the course fo=
r 14
consecutive days. =
b. <=
/span>A
grade of "W" will be given through the Friday of the twelfth we=
ek
of the semester for all drops initiated by the instructor or by the stude=
nt. =
c. <=
/span>After
the Friday of the twelfth week of the semester, a grade of "F" =
will
be given for the course at the end of the semester for unexcused absence.=
=
d. <=
/span>The instructor will drop an online student if =
they
have never logged-in to their course prior to the certifying the rolls
– on the 12th Class Day. a.Students will be dropped with a “W” for Unexcused
absences - failure to log-in to the course for 7 consecutive days=
. =
b. <=
/span>A
grade of "W" will be given through the Thursday of the fourth w=
eek
of the summer session for all drops initiated by the instructor or by the
student. =
c. <=
/span>After
the official drop date of the fourth week of the summer session, a grade =
of
"F" will be given for the course at the end of the session for
unexcused absence. =
d. <=
/span>The instructor will drop an online student if =
they
have never logged-in to their course prior to certifying the rolls –=
; on
the 4th Class Day. Stud=
ents
have the right to initiate a drop request from any or all classes by
informing the instructor via email or phone and following this up at t=
he
Admissions/Registrar’s Office. Instructors will drop students in a timely manner
according to the College's attendance policy in order to comply with the
requirements of external funding agencies. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that a drop slip be
completed, whether it is student-requested or faculty-initiated. Absence from Final Examination: A student who is absent from a final examinat=
ion
will earn a grade of "0" for the examination. Students who do n=
ot
take a final examination will earn an "F" in the course, unless
they present an authorization for the absence. Students duly
authorized not to take the final examination will receive a grade of
"F” or an Incomplete grade on their transcript until they take=
the
final examination. Such students must take the final within four months of
the initial exam date. A fee of $5.00 will be charged to a student=
for
taking a final examination other than at the scheduled time, re=
gardless
of the reason for absence. This fee will be paid at the Bursar’s
Office. Only students with a legitimate excuse may exercise this privileg=
e. Final
examinations cannot be re-taken.

All
tests, and Final Exams must be taken on campus, and must be taken on a timely basis as defined by the

online at the scheduled dates.
The chapter quizzes are designed to be used by the student as a
progress indicator. In the =
case
where the student does not take an exam, makeup exams WILL NOT BE GRANTED=
if
the instructor does not receive prior notification of your intended absen=
ce,
and a valid reason is given.
Under exceptional circumstances it is the instructor’s
prerogative to grant or not to grant a make-up exam. If there is no
notification of a missed test/exam the student will automatically lose
10points if a make-up is granted. Make-ups for exams will only be granted
under exceptional circumstances when the instructor has received prior no=
tice
that the student will not attend. Under most circumstances make-ups are
penalized a letter grade for not notifying the instructor in a timely bas=
is. If your having
problems with Blackboard. &nbs=
p; If
there is a problem with Blackboard, you may be excused from late work if =
the
problem proves to be Blackboard and not your computer. Problems with
Blackboard must be reported to the Help Desk and proven genuine (a problem
does exists) to accepted as a reason for late work. |
