COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A survey course focusing on computer-related terminology and applications, = history and development of computers in society, communicating instructions to the computer, future trends, and computer-related careers. Topics include basic concepts, n= umber systems and data representation, computer hardware components, introducti= on to programming languages and computer software. Laboratory time is scheduled to = enable the student to learn to use the computer as a tool.

INSTRUCTOR COURSE POLICIES

J Due dates= will be given for all assignments. NO incomplete assignments will be accepted.= Being absent on the day an assignment is due will not be accepted as a valid ex= cuse for turning in an assignment for full credit after the due date, regardless of the reason. L= ate assignments will be accepted 1 class session after the due date but with = a 30 point penalty and must be entirely complete and presentable. No assignmen= ts will be accepted beyond 1 late session. Assignments not in proper order (proper sequence, stapled, title page) will not be accepted and no credit will be awarded.* If you finish your assignments early, turn them in. I suggest you keep a log of submitted assignments to assist you in meeting = the deadlines.

J Missing a= n exam is a very serious action that can result in failing the course. Therefore= I will allow make-ups but only if the student meets and adheres to the guidelines concerning the makeup exam. If you miss a scheduled exam you m= ust submit, in person, a = memo stating your request for a makeup along with your reason for missing the exam. I must receive your written memo within 3 class days from the date = you did not attend the exam. If your excuse is deemed not valid or is not supported by documentation you will be given the makeup exam but will be penalized 20 points and you will forfeit any bonus points. If your excuse= is accepted and you have valid supporting documentation (doctor’s excu= se, hospital report, employer letter, etc.) you will not be penalized but you will forfeit bonus points. Only 1 makeup will be allowed per student per semester. You must take the makeup exam within 3 school days after your request has been approved. There is no makeup for the final exam.

J <= u>All students must adhere to the posted lab pol= icies. Internet access is limited to course project= s and is otherwise not permitted. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in loss of lab privileges. (NO computer activity while the instructor is lecturing)=

J No visito= rs allowed in the classroom. Institutional policy forbids anyone not registe= red for the course to attend a class session.

J If any pr= oblems should arise with the transferring of   credit earned for this cou= rse students may challenge or dispute the receiving institution’s decis= ion in accordance with the terms outlined in “resolution of transfer= 221; policy stated in the LCC catalog page 61.

J Open labs= are available outside class time to allow students to finish course work. If necessary, students must<= /b> invest personal time to insure success in the course and completion of all lab assignments.

J Incomplete grades will only be granted under exceptional circumstances and when cert= ain requirements are satisfied. To qualify for an incomplete you must have a passing average (70% or better) and 75% of the coursework must be complet= ed. As is the case with late assignments and makeup exams, you must have a va= lid excuse and supporting documentation.
