REQUIRED TEXTBOOK:

I.      =              Requirements:=

1. &= nbsp;   A formal research paper or other comparable project= is required. Research papers tha= t are entirely narrative or biographical in nature are discouraged. In order to pass the course, a stu= dent must satisfy this requirement in acceptable fashion.

2. &= nbsp;   At least three essays based on reading assignments = are required.

3. &= nbsp;   At least 60% of the course grade is based on writing assignments. To pass the cour= se, a student must earn passing average on the writing assignments.

4. &= nbsp;   Quizzes, tests and/or other evaluative instruments = will be administered according to the instructor’s discretion.

5. &= nbsp;   A comprehensive final examination constituting approximately 20% to 25% of the course grade is required.

Reading Requirements

Students will read approxi= mately 500 pages and analyze selections from textbook assignme= nts as well as newspapers, magazines, and other sources.

II. Format and Procedures:&= nbsp;

Format There wi= ll be weekly writing assignments and reading responses as well as presentations a= nd discussion.

Writing Policy A’s cannot be re-written and only one B paper can be re-written per semester. All C’s-F’s can be re-written.&nbs= p;

Late Policy<= span style=3D'font-family:"Times","serif";mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"= '>: Grades on all assignments will be deducted 30 for the first day late and 10=

Paper= s will not be accepted after the 3^rd day late, including weekends.

III. Course Requirements:&n= bsp;

1.= Attendance:

a.10% of the student’s final grade will be = for Attendance/Participation. Attendance is

marked<= /span> Tuesdays and Thursdays. The student will begin with 100 points for attendance/participation and will be deducted 10 points for each absenceb. During a regular semester, stude= nts will be dropped after being absent four consecutive lecture hours on Tuesday-Thursday or Monday-Wednesday schedule, or for 20% of the total class time.

b. A grade of “W” will be given through the Friday of the 12^th week of the

c. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that a drop slip is completed whet= her it is student or instructor initiated.

IV. Academic Integrity

Academic Dishonesty

= ;           The college expects all students to engage in all academic pursuits in a manner that is beyond reproach. Students will be expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their experiences in= the classroom. Any student found guilty of dishonesty in academic work is subje= ct to disciplinary action.

(1) The college and its official representatives may initiate disciplinary proceedings against a student accused of any form of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, the following:

a. "Scholastic dishonesty" includes, but is not limited to, cheating on

      academic work, plagiarism, and collusion.

b. Cheating on academic work includes:

    (a) Copying from another student's test paper or other academic

        =     work.

    (b) Using, during a test, materials not author= ized by the person

        =    giving the test.

    (c) Collaborating, without authority, with ano= ther student during

        =    an examination or in preparing academic w= ork.

    (d) Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting, or

        =    soliciting, in whole or part, the content= s of an unadministered

        =    test.

    (e) Substitution for another student, or permitting another student

        =    to substitute for oneself, to take a test= or prepare other

        =    academic work.

    (f) Bribing another person to obtain an unadministered test or

        =    information about an unadministered test.

=

c. "Plagiarism" means the appropriation of another's work and the unacknowledged incorporat= ion of        that     work in one's own written work offered for    =       credit.

=

d. "Collusion"= means the unauthorized collaboration   =           with another person in preparing written work &n= bsp;   offered for credit.

=

(2) Procedures for disci= pline due to academic dishonesty shall be the same as in student disciplinary actions, except that all academic dishonesty actions shall be first considered and reviewed by the faculty member. If the student does not accept the decision= of the faculty member, he/she may appeal the decision to the appropriate Department Chairperson, Dean of Instruction, or the Vice President of Instruction. If the student does not accept the decision of the appropriate Department Chairperson, Dean of Instruction, or the Vice President of Instruction, the student may then follow the normal disciplinary appeal procedures for a review of the decision.

Consequences:

First off= ense: Zero on the essay with an opportunity to rewrite, but

    wh= ere the grade cannot be higher than a 60.

Second offense: 0 = on the essay with no opportunity for improvement.

Third offense: automatic 0
