| CHECKOUT/RESERVES (CIRCULATION DESK)
(CIRC)
When you bring your semester validated ID to check books out, your student number is attached to the number of the book(s) you want to borrow. Unless you bring your books back to the desk and make sure that your account is clear (or you have fines to pay*) , you are still held accountable until the account is cleared. Using the outside drop box does NOT mean your account is cleared. That drop box is only for your convenience and does NOT mean your account is clear. The only way to be sure that you owe no fines, or that the book is no longer checked out to you, is to come to the desk and make sure the book is checked in and your account cleared. |
The Circulation Desk is the place to get the Reserve items your instructor(s) have placed there for you to checkout with your LCC semester validated ID. Reserves are usually materials that are in short supply or are not available for general borrowing . Reserve items can be library materials or they can be the instructor's personal items. Please take care when using reserve materials. You must have your ID, even to make copies. Reserve items are checked according to the time limits set by the instructor - 2 hrs, overnight, 2 days, etc. You MUST return the item on time or you will be charged a fine! |
Overdue fines for books are 25 cents a day. Overdue fines for reserve items are 50 cent an hour (or part of an hour) Lost books are USD $50.00 each. Damaged books are USD $20.00 each *In special situations you may be able to pay your accumulated fines with a promissory note, which is a promise to pay a pre-set amount within an agreed time period. This is at the discretion of the library staff. The purpose is to help you space the amount over a longer period of time to make it easier for you. We are not required to do this. |

| STUDY ROOMS
These study rooms (2 by the men's restroom by stacks call # G+, 1 room just above printer #2, and four rooms in the back near the Director's Office) can be used freely by anyone, but are meant to be used by 2 or more people. Your cooperation will be appreciated. |

| STACKS | ||||||||||

Re -shelving area This is the shelving unit (in the area behind Circulation and Stacks A-G) where books are sorted and stored before they are re-shelved in the generals stacks. Go here when you can't find a book in its usual call number location. Also check the carts behind the back half-wall of the Circulation Desk. (photo) |

A-G These books are toward the front of the library (on the left side as you walk in the front doors) near the wall behind the Circulation and Reference areas. |
H-J These books are located in a room just behind the A-G collection. There is a small arrow sign from the ceiling as you approach the area. |

| REFERENCE (REF) | ||||||||||
Reference Desk (photo) The Reference Desk (or Information Assistance desk) is the place to go when you are not sure where to start you research, or cannot find what you want to find, and to ask about anything else that you would like to know about here in the library. |
The Reference Collection books cannot be checked-out. These books follow the same Library of Congress subject classification as the rest of the books in the library. If you find a book in Reference, you can often find a similar book to check out at the same call number in the stacks. |
The Library of Congress Classification System has about 20 broad groups of subjects that are further classified into wide variety of subjects. Because the LC system uses subject headings and not topic headings (like kid's books, novels, biography, etc.) books are not located together in one place in the library but are spread through-out the collection according to the best subject heading. You may find that similar books tend to be in a similar place - e.g. kid's books tend to be in the PZs, and literature tends to be in the PSs, it's not so clear cut. |

Reference Office (photo) This office just near the Periodicals Desk and the water fountain, is where you go to ask about library tours, to find the ILL office, and the librarians' offices. |
ILL (photo) Inter Library Loan (I.L.L.) is a free service whereby you can get an article or a book that we do not physically have in our collection. You fill out your request online ( link ) and it takes about 3-4 days for an article and another 3 days for a book (since it arrives via US Postal Service). How it works is you make your request, figure on one working day to contact the library that has what you would like, a day for that library to find and copy the article, a day to fax the article (or package the book), and a day for us to get it and contact you. As noted, a book takes about 3 days more than an article. You pick the item up here in the library and if it is a book, check it out like you would a regular library book (with your LCC semester validated ID) |
