Explorations with Patterns

Section 1-1

Activity Name Activity Description
Sequencer Students input parameters (starting number, multiplier, addend) to generate number patterns in arithmetic and geometric sequences.
Coloring Multiples in Pascal's Triangle Given a number supplied by the applet, students select multiples of the number in Pascal's Triangle, creating geometric fractal patterns.
Coloring Remainders in Pascal's Triangle Using a number supplied by the applet as a divisor, students select members of Pascal's Triangle with similar remainders, creating geometric fractal patterns.
The Tortoise and Hare Race Students step through the 'tortoise and hare' race in a short investigation of Zeno's paradox. Discussion can introduce ideas of infinity and convergence of number series using pattern recognition.
Fractured Pictures Students input polygon and scale parameters to generate geometric fractal patterns.
Life Students run the classic simulation game 'life', and can investigate the behavior of a variety of cellular patterns as well as manipulate the game parameters.
Life Lite Students run a simplified version of the classic simulation game 'life', and can investigate the behavior of a variety of cellular patterns.
