It has been a transformative and record-breaking year for Laredo College.
Our impressive academic record is now being recognized with yet another
The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program recently named Laredo
College as one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges eligible to compete
for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.
Awarded every two years, this prize is the nation’s signature recognition
of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges. With a
singular focus on student success, it highlights institutions with outstanding
achievements in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree
completion, employment and earnings, and high-levels of access and success for
students of color and low-income students.
LC was selected from a pool of nearly 1,000 public two-year colleges
nationwide using publicly available data on student outcomes.
This very exclusive recognition involves a rigorous selection process by
the College Excellence Program. The
contenders cannot be recommended or self-nominated. Only the most prestigious
two-year institutions in the nation are considered for this accolade.
Data shows that over the last two years, student retention, graduation
rates and degree completion have improved at the top tier of 150 Aspen
The top ten finalists will be named in May 2020. The Aspen Institute will
then conduct site visits to each of the finalists and collect additional
quantitative data, including employment and earnings data. A distinguished jury
will make award decisions in spring 2021.
This accomplishment is a direct reflection of the outstanding leadership
and high academic standards at our institution.
Laredo College administrators and faculty understand that student-based
practices and initiatives are essential in the success of our institution. Our
focus remains in equipping our students with the knowledge and resources to succeed
in their chosen field of work.
