The Laredo College Environmental
Science Center is in a festive mood with the various celebrations that will bring
the center to the forefront this year.
The most prominent celebration is
the center itself. For 20 years, the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science
Center (LBVESC) has welcomed many visitors from our community and surrounding
areas, totaling more than 10,000 people a year. As they enjoy our nature
trails, butterfly gardens and meet our colorful wildlife, center visitors have
been educated on environmental issues, nature and much more.
Another great addition to this
event is the 25th anniversary of El Paso del Indio Nature Trail. This
trail has been the home of multiple bird species, a guest home for others that
travel through the area and other wildlife creatures and nature. It represents
part of the ecosystem connecting our college to the Rio Grande.
These are not the only reasons to
have a big celebration. We are also having a “Sweet 15” for our energetic
bobcat, Lucky. His friends and the community at large will celebrate his
birthday with us.
Along with the environmental
focus, we will be commemorating Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, which
aims to draw attention to the mass extinction of various species in our planet,
climate change, our habitat and much more.
To conclude with the many
festivities of the day, our very own LBVESC Director Tom Miller will be honored
for his 20 years of service to Laredo College and the many more years
participating in the community.
Year after year, many Laredoans
enjoy the amazing opportunities and activities our center offers. Therefore, we
are reaching out to those interested in becoming sponsors for the upcoming Gator-Aid
and Friends Gala. Donations will help raise funds to maintain, renovate and
repair the center.
The different ways you can
support the LBVESC is by purchasing a $75 entrance ticket to participate in the
fun event that will include a delicious dinner, happy hour, live music and a
silent auction on April 24 at the LC Falcon Bank Executive Conference Room,
located inside the Harold R. Yeary Library. We are also seeking support for
raffle prizes, silent auction items and table sponsorships.
Those who participate will be
recognized in publications, the day of the event and in other areas, but most
importantly, will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
