Laredo College unveils new program offering free classes

FMP

Laredo College is continuously looking for innovative ways to help students enjoy a well-rounded, affordable and stress-free college experience. Whether it is through our community partnerships that offer free networking and training opportunities or new grants that help students cover their educational expenses, our college understands that student success and financial stability are correlated.

On Tuesday, June 2, Laredo College President Dr. Ricardo J. Solis announced at a press conference a new program to help students save money and keep their college momentum going from summer to fall. President Solis outlined the key details of this initiative, dubbed the Fall Momentum Program.

“This is a historic step for our institution,” he said. “Although we have provided discounts and financial support initiatives in the past, a program of this magnitude has never been adopted before. The goal is to help our students get ahead in their career by taking advantage of our accelerated summer courses while earning a three-hour course credit to redeem during the fall 2020 semester free of charge.”

Through the Fall Momentum Program, Laredo College will be covering the tuition and fees for a three-credit hour academic course during the fall 2020 semester for students who take two three-hour credit courses during Maymester and/or summer sessions one and two.

Now is a great time to start, resume or finish a degree and join the workforce. This is one way our institution can give back to our students and help them reach their academic goals and save money.

This one-time credit incentive would only apply for the fall 2020 semester and will not carry over into the spring 2021 semester. The free course must fall in line with the student’s program of study.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students who qualify to extend their summer education into fall. Students receiving Federal Financial Aid could be eligible to receive an additional $500 or more in their refunds. However, refunds will vary depending on each students’ individual situation.

The program was conceived to help students financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and to motivate them to stay focused in their studies and take advantage of our convenient online and hybrid summer course offerings.

To qualify, students must be high school graduates evidenced by a secondary diploma or its equivalency, must complete at least six credit hours by end of the summer, attain a “C” grade or above and must be advised and registered for at least 12 credit hours for the fall 2020 semester.

Students who meet the eligibility would qualify automatically for this program if they are attending summer and plan to continue at LC in the fall.

Fall 2020 tuition and fees must be paid prior to receiving credit for the three-credit hour academic course. Additionally, any outstanding balance owed prior to the fall 2020 semester must be cleared before applying the credit for the three-credit hour course.

The tuition and fees credit for the three-credit hour academic course will be reflected on students’ accounts after Oct. 19, 2020.

Registration for summer session two is underway and ends on July 3. We encourage students to register early and take advantage of this great program.
