Project Purpose: This project is intended to provide instruction to adults who are housed in a correctional setting and who are “most in need” of adult education in order to actively participate in the educational system or in the workforce.  Services are provided through a variety of classes offered in correctional settings.  Courses include English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED preparation.  Instruction is delivered primarily through the traditional classroom setting, in addition to computer-assisted instruction and the use of instructional television via programming on Channel 55.

Project Purpose:   The Federal ABE program is specifically designed to provide instruction to the “most in need” adult population of the service delivery area (SDA) with the opportunity to enhance their basic skill levels and educational goals, thereby enabling them to advance in their education and/or improve their ability to compete in today’s workforce. The ABE program offers English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Development (GED) classes in the counties of Webb, Zapata and Jim Hogg.  The ABE program uses traditional classroom settings and also utilizes non-traditional settings with the utilization of computer software and the LCC instructional television channel.  Classes are provided both on-site (LCC) and at external sites.

Project Purpose: This project is intended to provide professional development to instructors and support staff to provide instruction to students enrolled under the Adult Education Program.  Professional Development is based on an ongoing needs assessment of staff and students.  It addresses such areas as instructional methodology, student assessment and retention, and is instrumental in assuring student and program success.  All instructors are required to have a minimum of 12 hours of professional development per year.  For those lacking teacher certification, the requirement is a minimum of 24 hours per year until they obtain an Adult Basic Education credential or complete two years of adult basic education experience.  Professional development is primarily provided through collaboration with and the assistance of such service providers as the ESL Professional Development Project at Texas A&M Kingsville and the Adult Basic Education Professional Development Center - Region 20 Educational Service Center.

Project Purpose: The purpose of the TIF LB9 grant is to reach out beyond the confines of the LCC campus and include entities not directly associated with Laredo Community College. The targeted audiences area the Border region Mental Health Mental Retardation and the LCC Adult education Program. Computer and software purchased through this grant will allow the adult education students to practice for their GED exams.  Border Region clients will be trained by MHMR staff to use computers to research community resources such as those dealing with housing, employment and advocacy groups.

Project Purpose: The community network is composed of seven agencies coordinated by Laredo Community College.  The agencies are the county of Webb, the city of Laredo, Mercy Health Center, the South Texas Workforce Development Board, Laredo Independent School District and United Independent School District.  The project will establish a collaborative communications network for the first time in the city and county.  Residents will have local and worldwide access to education, information, and communication resources, which will promote participating on civic life, and enhance community life socially, culturally and economically.

Project Purpose: This project provides distance learning equipment and training to area high schools and the College.  There are 7 components to the project: (1) install technical equipment and management systems; (2) provide continuing education for health professions; (3) provide health and fitness information to the public; (4) implement college courses via distance learning; (5) develop health career awareness classes; (6) host inter-school professional staff meetings; and finally (7) offer high school credit courses via distance learning.  Each school district contributed $25,000 towards the implementation of this consortium.

Project Purpose: Funded by National Writing Project, with contributed funds from LCC, TAMIU, and local independent school districts at a rate of $700.00 per participant enrolled.   STWP directs activities for kindergarten through university teachers dedicated to improving the teaching of writing.  STWP administers a Summer Institute, research groups, and writing workshops.  Teacher consultants of STWP conduct professional development workshops in the teaching of writing for classroom teachers at all levels.  STWP Summer Institute for the Teaching of Writing is an intensive, five-week six-graduate- hour writing seminar for teachers.

Project Purpose: This program is designed to enhance LCC students’ academic skills, increase retention and graduation rates, facilitate entrance into four-year colleges, and foster a climate which supports the success of low-income/first generation college students and students with disabilities.  The Supportive/Developmental Instructional Course component consists of additional instruction, remedial lab, and support service oriented activities that provide basic skills instruction in reading, English and math to assist in remediating educational deficiencies.  Additional support services such as peer tutoring, computer-assisted tutoring, assistance in applying for financial aid, assistance in transferring to a four-year institution, and personal/career/academic counseling are available.

Project Purpose:  The Federal TANF program provides instruction to adults who qualify for TANF related services and who are “most in need” of an adult education to actively participate in the educational system or the workforce.  To identify eligible participants, the Adult Education TANF Program Instructional Coordinator works closely with the Texas Department of Human Services, the One-Stop Center, the Webb County Welfare-to-Work program, and HACU Work to Succeed program.  This program offers English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, and General Education Development classes.  To accommodate the greatest number of  TANF recipients, these classes will be scheduled in the morning, afternoon and evening at Webb, Zapata, and Jim Hogg counties.   The program curricular and instructional processes reflect learner-centered and participatory approaches designed to meet learner needs.   Aside from the traditional classroom approach, technology has been infused in the delivery of services through the Instructional Television Channel, which offers GED on TV, both in English and in Spanish.  Distance Learning is another means through which students will be educationally served.  For students who wish to fast track their preparation, another means of instruction is available via GED preparation software.  Curricular content and instructional practices are based on functional (real-life) contexts within a holistic framework to ensure that the individual student has the skills needed to compete in the workplace and exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Project Purpose: The purpose of the project is to provide students with the needed English, employee readiness and job-related skills that will facilitate their entry to employment within the retail and sales industry.  Students will participate in an 11-week intensive preparation course using the EFF curriculum prescribed by TEA.  The course will consist of classroom instruction and on-the-job experience provided through internships.  The sites for the internships will be local retail/sales businesses.

Project Purpose: Upward Bound is a program specifically designed for first-generation college-bound and/or low-income students.  The year round program is designed to enhance students’ academic and social skills to succeed in post-secondary education.  The program’s objectives are to improve student’s high school grade point average, raise their self-esteem, increase standardized test scores and to provide assistance in applying for college admission, financial aid, and scholarships.  It provides college exposure through field trips to several colleges and universities.  The program goals are met by student participation in three components.  The summer component is a six-week program at the LCC campus, including recreational activities, intensive academic instruction and an educational/cultural field trip.  The Fall/Spring component includes Saturday meetings, after school tutoring, cultural field trips, an academic competition, social events, activities in career awareness, and counseling.  The Bridge component is designed for graduating seniors who will be enrolled in summer classes at LCC; Upward Bound offers full scholarships for the first summer session to selected students.
