Federal Grants

Pell Grant 

Federal Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. These funds are not required to be paid back. The amount awarded is based on the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and the number of credit hours in which the student is enrolled during the semester. A student must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for this grant.

Award Amounts 

Awards are partially based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA and by a student’s level of enrollment. How much you may receive will depend on your EFC, your cost of attendance, your enrollment status, and whether you attend school for a full academic year. You may only receive Pell Grant funds from one institution at a time.

*Students enrolled less than full-time may still receive a Pell Grant award if their EFC allows it. 

Eligibility Determination 

To determine if you are eligible, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula, to evaluate the information you report when you apply through the Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The formula produces an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number. The lower the EFC number, the more aid the student is eligible for. Your Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) contains this number and will tell you if you are eligible.

To be considered for Pell Grant Eligibility, you must:

  • Fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid,
  • Meet all Department of Education eligibility requirements including but not limited to:
  • Having a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate,
  • Registering with the Selective Services, if required,
  • Being a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen,
  • Having a valid Social Security Number,
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program,
  • Meet the standards of the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (FA SAP).

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant 

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is an additional grant available to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need and gives priority to students who receive Federal Pell Grants and whose Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is a zero. There is no guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive a FSEOG; students at LC are awarded based on the availability of funds. Students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for this grant.

Award Amounts  

There is no guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive a FSEOG. FSEOG funds are awarded by semester.

Laredo College receives a certain amount of FSEOG funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid. Once the full amount of the school’s FSEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more FSEOG awards can be made for that year.

Eligibility determination

Following Federal Regulations, Laredo College awards students with the lowest EFC (zero EFC), who have demonstrated Pell Grant eligibility for the same award year.

  • Fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid,
  • Meet all Department of Education eligibility requirements including but not limited to:
  • Having financial need,
  • Having a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate,
  • Registering with the Selective Services, if required,
  • Being a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen,
  • Having a valid Social Security Number,
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program,
  • Meet the standards of the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (FA SAP),
  • Have a zero EFC,
  • Be registered and attending at least 6 credit hours in a semester.

State Grants

On-Campus TPEG 

The On-Campus TPEG provides awards to students who pay for educational expenses while at Laredo College.

To be Eligible for the On-Campus TPEG, a student must:

  1. Must show financial need
  2. Be enrolled at least 6 eligible hours.
  3. Awards are based on availability of funds.

Texas Grant - Towards, EXcellence, Access and Success

The TEXAS Grant was established by the Texas Legislature to help well-prepared high school graduates with financial need attend public institutions of higher education in Texas

As of Fall 2014, public community colleges, public technical institutes, and public state colleges will no longer be able to make Initial Year (IY) TEXAS Grant awards to students.

Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG)

 The TEOG Grant was established by the Texas Legislature to help students with financial need attend public community colleges, public technical colleges, or public state colleges in Texas.  

 Funding is limited, so applying early is key! The FAFSA Application is available on or after October 1st. 

This grant provides assistance to eligible students for payment of tuition and fees.

To be eligible for the TEOG (Initial Award) a student must:

  1. Be a resident of Texas
  2. Show financial need (EFC <$2000 FOR FIRST AWARD)
  3. Have applied for any available financial aid assistance.
  4. Have graduated from a TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL with a BASIC DIPLOMA or GED 
  5. Meet the Selective Service requirements, or be exempt.
  6. Have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving a controlled substance.
  7.  Is enrolled at least ½ time in the first 30 hours (or their equivalent) in an associate's degree or certificate program at a public two-year institution or higher education.
  8.  Not to be eligible for the TEXAS GRANT PROGRAM
  9.  Not have received an associate's or bachelor's degree.

To be eligible for the TEOG (Renewal Award) a student must:

  1. Meet all the requirements for a first-time award with the exception of the EFC.
  2. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  1. At the end of the first year (IY), meet the institution's academic requirements.
  2. In the remaining years (RY) maintain a 2.5 overall grade point average (GPA) and complete 75% of the hours attempted in the prior year of college.

TEOG Eligibility Ends when a student meets the following requirements:

  1. Student acquires associate's degree
  2. Student receives the TEOG up to 75 attempted hours
  3. Student receives the TEOG for four years from the start of the semester or term in which a student received his or her initial award of the TEOG.
