General Studies

Associate of Science

Overview

The Associate of Science (AS) degree is a two-year general education degree designed to satisfy the attainment of a broad, balanced, two-year college education. This degree forms the foundation and prerequisites for transfer into a baccalaureate program.

Information

Most academic courses offered at Laredo College (LC) share the same course abbreviation and number as their equivalent in the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS), unless otherwise indicated.

In general, any LC course listed in the Texas Higher Education Board’s (THECB) Academic Course Guide Manual (ACGM) may be applied as a general elective. However, elective course selection should be guided by the student’s major and transfer institution. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with an academic advisor to ensure that selected courses will be both transferable and applicable to their intended degree program after transfer.

Students must complete a minimum of 60 semester credit hours to earn an AS; 42 semester credit hours are core curriculum requirements. The AS program may have additional requirements in disciplines such as science, mathematics, or computer science. The AS program may serve as a foundation for the BS degree.

Speak with an academic advisor at your college to choose courses that will help you to transfer to a specific university.
