The Laredo College Visual and Performing Arts Department is continuously showcasing and fostering appreciation for the arts and culture in our community. Its newest monthlong exhibit will take up residence at the Martha Fenstermaker Memorial Visual Arts Gallery next week.
“On the Edge, Al Borde” is a multimedia art exhibition curated by Daphne Art Foundation Executive Director Maritza Bautista. The exhibit will highlight the artwork of eight up-and-coming artists from Laredo and include a variety of mediums, techniques and an installation.
The gallery’s opening reception will be on Thursday, June 8 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a curator lecture at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
Founded in 2019, Daphne Art Foundation is a Laredo nonprofit arts organization that focuses on improving the quality of life through transformative cultural experiences. Its mission is to advance the visual, performing and media arts in our border region.
“There is currently a surge of young artists shaping the culture of Laredo with photography, video, guerilla style art installations and plein-air artmaking. They are reimagining and creating new spaces of art, all while captivating audiences with their murals and street art. It’s really inspiring,” Bautista said.
The title of the exhibition reflects the themes and styles the artists chose to work with, which are edgy and reflective of contemporary art practices they push themselves to explore. The exhibition will be composed of over 30 works in a variety of media, including oil, gouache, acrylic paintings, installation, digital and prints, video and photos.
The artists are Alexander Barron, Alejandro Cortinas, Genesis Victoria Hernandez, Kassandra Romero, Homero Salazar, Raul Seca Jr., Gabriela Treviño and Martha Viera.
The exhibit will run until Aug. 4. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
