Laredo College honored our nation’s heroes

The historic Ft. McIntosh Campus was the perfect venue to commemorate the bravery and sacrifices of all veterans during the college’s annual Veterans Day observance ceremony on Friday, Nov. 10.

Laredo College administrators, faculty, staff and students paid tribute to our nation’s veterans for defending our country and protecting our freedom.

The Laredo College Veteran Services hosted the beautiful ceremony. Under the leadership of Director Albert Hernandez, a U.S. Marine Corps and Texas Army National Guard veteran, the department aims to provide veterans and their dependents with guidance and assistance regarding their educational benefits.

“Obtaining the privilege, honor and status of being called a veteran is something prestigious to feel pride over,” Hernandez said. “Whether you served one tour or multiple tours of duty in active service, reserves or national guard within our country or abroad, you’ve earned the title. As a veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Texas Army National Guard, I am here to continue serving our veterans and their dependents through Laredo College.”

LC’s own Dr. Michael Bailey, Specialist 4th Class U.S. Army and LC Homeland Security Studies Program Director, served as master of ceremonies and Crystal Cabido, U.S. Army Veteran & Administrative Officer to the Assistant Director of the Veterans Affairs Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System, was the event’s keynote speaker.

Additionally, local veterans and veterans’ organizations were part of the event, with Texas State Guard veteran Captain Gerardo Morales leading the invocation, U.S. Marine Corps veteran Sgt. Juan Rodriguez leading the benediction, Laredo College student and Marine Corps veteran Luis Camacho reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the American Legion Post 59 Color Guard doing the posting and retiring of colors.

Veterans and their dependents interested in pursuing a higher education are encouraged to email veterans@laredo.edu for assistance and guidance.

The college is honored to hold this annual event honoring our nation’s greatest heroes to thank them for their selfless service.
