Laredo College’s commitment to lifelong learning and offering an affordable, high-quality education for all was recently recognized with a prestigious award.
The LC Adult Education and Literacy Department recently attended the 26th annual Texas Workforce Commission Conference in Houston, Texas, where the team was awarded the “Best in Class” recognition. This $75,000 award is a performance-driven, quality award focused on a grant recipient’s performance toward meeting targeted measures, such as measurable skill gains, achieved credentials and enrollment targets.
The award is presented to the top three performers in Texas, with Laredo College receiving first place out of 28 other Adult Education and Literacy providers. The funds will be used to further enhance the program’s instructional resources by purchasing software and classroom materials and providing additional professional development for instructors.
With a dedicated full-time staff of a dozen in addition to 30 adjunct instructors and serving approximately 1,200 students each year, the Adult Education and Literacy Department has earned numerous prestigious awards and recognitions for fostering a more literate, educated community.
The program provides comprehensive English literacy services with basic reading, writing and mathematics instruction to adult learners. In addition, it offers GED services and Integrated Education & Training (IET) opportunities for those seeking to learn high-demand workforce skills.
“It is very rewarding that Laredo College was selected as the top program from throughout the state of Texas,” LC Dean of Community Education Sandra Cortez said. “I am truly proud of the program team and instructors that provide this important service to our community; they are dedicated and have a passion for student success. Our goal is to establish paths for individuals desiring to gain the education necessary to become a skilled worker or transition to higher education.”
The Adult Education and Literacy Program offers a wide range of services at both LC campuses and various external sites. Day and evening classes are available to accommodate students’ schedules. For additional information, call (956) 721-5436 or (956) 794-4520.
